Parents of Deaf Children (PODC) is hosting a workshop for parents or caregivers of Deaf or Hard of Hearing (HOH) children to help them gain practical tools and strategies for navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The evening workshop on Wednesday 27 August is entitled NDIS 101: What every Parent of a Deaf or HOH Child needs to know.
PODC is a non-profit organisation that supports families with babies, children and teenagers with hearing loss in NSW and the ACT.
Ms Suzanne Robertson, PODC president, said the workshop would assist people who were feeling overwhelmed by NDIS jargon, budgets, and “reasonable and necessary” rules.
“We’ll cover everything families need to know to approach the NDIS with confidence, including understanding how the NDIS works for Deaf children and why supports are often misunderstood,” she said.
“Key terms including PACE, R&N and mainstream supports will be explained in plain English.”
Other topics include:
- Breaking down budgets – core, capacity and capital.
- Who funds what? (NDIS, education, health).
- Reasonable and necessary versus parental responsibility.
- The “ordinary life” principle and how to apply it.
- Writing strong goals that get funded.
- Building effective evidence without over-medicalising.
- Why Auslan, captioning and language access are rights.
- Proactive planning, consultation rights, and common traps to avoid.
“Everyone who attends will receive a full set of tools and resources to help put this information into practice,” Robertson said.
Live captioning and Auslan interpreters will be provided.
Register here for the workshop on 27 August 2025 which goes from 7.30pm–9pm AEST.
