Chronic ear disease will be in the spotlight at the OMOZ (Otitis Media Australia) 2024 conference in Newcastle in August 2024.

The conference will provide a forum for researchers, clinical practitioners and health workers investigating and treating chronic ear disease in Australia.

Conference themes include a comprehensive look at the latest cutting-edge research including immunity, vaccines and interventions, leading clinical practice and working at the grass roots of people care.

Organisers say the conference will bring together surgeons, physicians, pathologists, hearing service practitioners, health practitioners and community members in a unique gathering that encourages cross-disciplinary conversations, knowledge sharing, and development of innovative strategies to address ear health challenges.

There will be opportunities for networking, workshops, educational sessions and for those working in the clinical setting at the patient interface to share their experiences and inform best practice.

Organisers are encouraging Indigenous researchers and practitioners to attend a mob only day dedicated to highlighting the role of Indigenous clinicians in ear health. This segment will be a platform for Indigenous voices to share experiences, insights, and culturally sensitive approaches to combating ear health issues in their communities.

Proud Worimi man, Professor Kelvin Kong AM who practises as an otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon in Newcastle, will chair the meeting. His research focuses on strategies to reduce the burden and impact of the high rates of chronic ear disease and hearing loss in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

His research interests range from basic biological discoveries to rethinking ear, nose and throat health service delivery nationwide.

Indigenous children in Australia continue to face significant challenges in maintaining healthy ears, which can lead to profound impacts on their overall health, education, and quality of life. OMOZ is dedicated to raising awareness about this critical issue and fostering a holistic approach to ear health improvement.

The OMOZ 2024 conference will be from August 27-30 in Newcastle on Awabakal and Worimi Country. Early bird registration closes 13 May and abstract submission deadline is 31 May. For more details visit https://www.omoz.com.au/
