The European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association (EHIMA) has reported a 4% increase in hearing aid sales in Europe in 2024, with more than 22 million hearing aids sold.
The association represents the world’s major manufacturers of hearing instruments.
On 15 May 2025 it announced consolidated sales figures of its member companies for 2024.
The association said the data revealed a “continued upward trend in demand for professionally fitted hearing instruments, signalling increasing awareness of hearing health and the benefits of modern hearing technologies”.
The data revealed member companies collectively sold 22.69 million hearing aids in 2024, marking a 4% increase compared to 2023. This growth underscored the ongoing efforts to address hearing loss through early intervention and accessible audiological care, the organisation said.
“We are pleased to see a continued rise in the uptake of hearing instruments, which confirms that people are increasingly prioritising their hearing health,” said Mr Peter Karlströmer, newly elected president of EHIMA, and CEO of GN.
“Our member companies remain committed to innovating for better hearing and supporting public health initiatives that promote early diagnosis and treatment.”
The organisation said all EHIMA member companies were dedicated to high-quality solutions fitted by hearing care professionals to meet individual needs.
“The consistent sales growth also reflects improved access to hearing care services in many regions and the increasing role of hearing devices in promoting healthy aging,” it said.
EHIMA data revealed that:
- In 2019, 17.06 million hearing aids were sold in Europe, up 6.4% from the previous year.
- In 2020, during the COVID pandemic annual sales dropped 17.2% to 14.12 million.
- In 2021, they rose 37% to 19.34 million.
- In 2022 they jumped 4.7% to 20.25 million.
- In 2023, they again rose, by 7.7% to 21.81 million.
- In 2024, sales increased by 4% to 22.69 million.
The association said data from 2020 showed that more than 11% of people in Europe have hearing loss, but only 36% use hearing aids.
It said untreated hearing loss costs the European Union 185 billion euros each year (A$325 billion) according to a 2019 study, but hearing aids and hearing implants help to reduce these costs.
