Audiologists and audiometrists working with Workcover clients may benefit from a new online post graduate course in Compensable Health and Medicine starting in 2025.
Melbourne audiologist Ms Jasna Bruce, who is a member of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Clinical Panel, said the course would be run through Monash University in partnership with the Personal Injury Education Foundation.
Bruce is also a member of Victoria’s WorkSafe Clinical Panel.
“The university module on compensable health is new and may be of relevance to audiologists/audiometrists working with Workcover and other clients,” she told HPA.
“Health professionals can enrol to do it as a one-off module. It applies to clinical scenarios involving any compensable claim whether it be traffic accident, work related injury, or personal injury resulting in hearing loss.
“Managing patients with harm from compensable injuries is a specialist area though not much targeted education about this is provided in medical and allied health training.”
Dr Michael Di Donato from Monash’s School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine will facilitate the 10-week course which aims to equip practitioners with the knowledge and skills to improve the quality of care for compensable patients.
The course is suitable for GPs and allied health professionals.
The self-paced course covers topics of compensable health and medicine spanning healthcare and personal injury compensation systems, navigating compensation systems, clinical concepts and frameworks, common conditions, the science and treatment of compensable conditions, mental health and permanent injuries.
While most sessions are online, a two-day intensive teaching period will be hosted online via Zoom or in person at 553 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
The inaugural course is from 3 March to 10 May 2025.
