Queensland audiologist and Audiology Australia’s immediate past president, Dr Barbra Timmer, has been elected to the International Society of Audiology (ISA) Executive Committee.

Dr Timmer will serve as the member at large for the Asia/Western Pacific region for a two-year period from 25 May 2026 to 25 April 2028.

“I am honoured to have been elected as member at large for Asia/Western Pacific,” she told Hearing Practitioner Australia. “I look forward to joining the executive committee and advocating for the audiology profession as well as people with hearing loss globally.”

She said the role included being a member on the committee and contributing to the leadership, strategic direction, and ongoing development of the society at an international level.

“The ISA is a global society that includes individuals and audiology organisations representing more than 50,000 members in 37 countries,” Dr Timmer said.

“The overarching aim is to connect a global network of audiology professionals and facilitate knowledge sharing and learning for the benefit of people with hearing loss.”

Dr Timmer has served on the Audiology Australia board for seven years including six as president. She remains on the board and supports new president Ms Lia Traves.

A senior lecturer and research academic at The University of Queensland, Dr Timmer PhD, has worked at UQ for more than 12 years.

She has also held the position of senior scientist at Sonova for eight years, and worked for Phonak for many years before that, including roles as research audiologist, global director of audiology and education, senior product manager, audiology manager, product education manager and in sales and marketing.

Dr Timmer was previously an audiology business manager for ReSound in The Netherlands and a clinical audiologist at VU University Medical Centre and Australian Hearing in The Netherlands and Australia.

Her nomination stated: “Barbra is a clinical audiologist, academic, and international leader in hearing healthcare.

“Holding a PhD in audiology, MBA, and postgraduate audiology qualification, she combines research, education, and professional leadership.

“She has been an ISA member for over a decade, presenting webinars and contributing to World Congress of Audiology meetings.

“Her research pioneered ecological momentary assessment and improved rehabilitation, family centred care, and hearing aid uptake.

“As a university lecturer, industry scientist, and former professional association president, she strengthens standards, mentors future audiologists, and advances global collaboration to improve outcomes for people with hearing loss worldwide today and beyond.”
