Sixty people attended Audiology Australia’s inaugural Connect and Learn event in Melbourne on 15 August 2025, with Sydney and Brisbane events still to come.
“AudA members took over the Yarra River suite at Batman’s Hill on Collins,” an Audiology Australia (AudA) spokesperson said. “Attendees explored applications of NAL-NL3, noise reduction in hearing aids, and how to fit hearing aids on musicians.”
Ms Sarah Swann, a senior audiologist and lecturer from The University of Melbourne, discussed how audiologists could do better in treating musicians and addressing the specific needs of this group by asking the question, ‘Is music a listening goal for you?’
The in-person professional development events give audiologists in Australia the chance to sharpen their hearing aid fitting skills, network and gain practical skills to improve client outcomes.
Centred around the theme, ‘Hearing aids: Understanding the tech behind the fit’, the 2.5-hour events explore how hearing aid technology can be better tailored to the individual auditory system.
With a focus on real-world application, attendees gain a deeper understanding of how to make fitting decisions that lead to more effective, personalised outcomes.
The events are during a Friday afternoon timeframe of 3pm–5.30pm local time.
Research audiologists Mr Matthew Croteau and Ms Catherine Kwok from the National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) provide practical guidance at all events on hearing aid fitting using the new NAL-NL3 fitting system.
Ms Lisa McBride, product and audiology manager from GN Hearing, will also speak at all events. She will unpack how noise reduction systems work to help clinicians have deeper understanding of how they can fine tune fittings and set realistic expectations.
The Brisbane event’s local speaker is Associate Professor Wayne Wilson from the University of Queensland’s Discipline of Audiology at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, who will lead the session ‘We can fit hearing aids to people with normal hearing thresholds – but should we?’
Ms Jasmine Thomas, principal audiologist from Hills Audiology, will be the local presenter at the Sydney event, presenting on ‘Determining success by preparing your client on what to expect from their hearing aid fitting’.
Sydney’s Connect and Learn event will be on 22 August and Brisbane’s on 29 August.
Registrations have closed for the Sydney event but remain open until 24 August for the Brisbane event.
Supporters include event partner GN Hearing, exhibitor Natus Sensory and supporter, A.T. Still University.
The sessions offer two CPD points in category 2.1 and are open to AudA members ($49) and non-members ($59).
